At its outset, corporate sustainability was thought of largely as the need to reduce negative impact, and often failed to address the systemic drivers of waste altogether. As new paradigms such as Cradle-To-Cradle and the Circular Economy emerged, sustainability practice gravitated from a focus on linear reduction towards an approach based on “designing out waste.”

At the same time, a new trend is emerging in business – the rise of social enterprise. The line between mission-driven organizations and profit-driven companies is being blurred by the growing opportunity to generate ROI while providing beneficial and responsible products or services.

The convergence of these trends presents a great opportunity for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Now more than ever, with developments in technology and growing market demand, entrepreneurs have the chance to turn sustainability-focused products and services into viable businesses.

For the secnd Ryerson Talks: Sustainability event, Richard Beaumont, through his own experiences as CEO and co-founder of Green Standards, will share his insights into corporate sustainability, the growing opportunity for entrepreneurs, and the lean startup mindset that excels in the social innovation space.
