Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning account for over 40% of the energy used in buildings. GPRO Mechanical & HVAC-R explains how to make HVACR equipment as efficient as possible, while providing the same levels of comfort to occupants. GPRO Mechanical & HVAC-R gives experienced construction professionals the critical tools needed to transition from conventional to sustainable construction practices. GPRO trained mechanical professionals and HVAC contractors can qualify for a LEED point under LEED Pilot Credit 81. GPRO Mechanical & HVAC-R is ideal for a range of professionals in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industries including subcontractors, installers, technicians and estimators.

This 12-hour certificate course can be scheduled to meet the needs of your organization. Certificate exam is included.


Part 1: Fundamentals of Building Green

Part 2: Mechanical & HVAC-R

  • How to achieve high efficiency with mechanical insulation and HVAC controls
  • The mechanical trades’ role in testing and balancing, commissioning, and maintenance
  • Important practices for retrofitting HVAC systems in existing buildings

It is mandatory to attend all course hours to be eligible to write the exam. GPRO Construction Management qualifies for 12 AIA and GBCI CE Credits. Gold Seal certified individuals are able to self-report this course for 2 Gold Seal credits. 


Shane McCarthy LEED AP, HVACR Professor and Consultant

Shane has been active in the green building community in recruitment and advocating environmental sustainability throughout Canada for over a decade. He is currently working with Urban Green Council as a GPRO Outreach Consultant and GPRO Master Trainer for the CaGBC-GTC chapter.

Shane managed the Private Career College for the Refrigeration Workers of Ontario Training Centre for the past 19 years. He taught as a part-time instructor for 10 years and has been the Training Director since 1987. Shane delivered Train-the-Trainer programs for the United Association at the annual Instructor Training Program for 12 years and also has served as an on-line instructor for HVACR programs.

Over his 40 year career, he provided expertise as a trade practitioner on many construction and service projects throughout Canada. He also provided subject matter expertise for government, sector councils, building trades and HVACR industry associations.  Shane’s skills include developing curriculum, facilitating programming and designing sustainability based training for trades and the construction industry. 

Shane is a member of a variety of apprenticeship and industry committees. He advises Humber Colleges on HVACR and sustainable building programs. He is a member of the Ontario College of Trades— Trade Board for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and the President of HVACR Heritage Centre. In his spare time, Shane volunteers with Skills Canada, and writes and reviews for technical publishers.
